Friends of Sterling Forest Hike: Iron Mines of Sterling Forest

Join the Friends of Sterling Forest for their educational hike exploring the Iron Mines of Sterling Forest.

Sunday, October 30th
1:00 to 4:00pm

Explore some of the mines located in Sterling Forest State Park with local historian and iron mining expert Doc Bayne. This will be a moderate 3-mile hike with ups and downs on a mountainous trail.

Wear hiking boots/sturdy shoes and bring water and a snack.

Their hikes will include stops along the way to interpret natural and historic features.

As hunting is allowed in portions of Sterling Forest State Park, they suggest wearing hunter orange or bright colors other than white during the hunting season.

The Friends of Sterling Forest is a non-profit organization established to preserve, protect and foster an appreciation of the natural resources and historical treasures that make up Sterling Forest State Park.

The Friends of Sterling Forest helps with the stabilization, restoration and maintenance of historic buildings and sites within the Park.  Sites such as Southfields Furnace, Sterling Furnace and Sterling Forge, where the Great Chain across the Hudson River was made, are in desperate need of attention.

In addition, the Friends of Sterling Forest host lectures, hikes and special events each month, promoting the Park.  The public is cordially invited to attend these events free of charge.
