History of the Sterling Mines Lecture by Friends of Sterling Forest

Learn about the many mines in Sterling Forest with this lecture by Doc Bayne.

Sunday, January 8th
1:00pm

In 1736, iron ore was discovered in the wilderness that is now Sterling Forest State Park. The ore found here was of high quality - in fact the quality was such that during the American Revolution, the Continental Army commissioned Noble, Townsend & Company’s Sterling Iron Works to manufacture the Great Chain that was placed across the Hudson River at West Point.

Join Doc Bayne for a PowerPoint presentation on the fascinating history of the Sterling mines.

The Friends of Sterling Forest is a non-profit organization established to preserve, protect and foster an appreciation of the natural resources and historical treasures that make up Sterling Forest State Park.

The Friends of Sterling Forest helps with the stabilization, restoration and maintenance of historic buildings and sites within the Park.  Sites such as Southfields Furnace, Sterling Furnace and Sterling Forge, where the Great Chain across the Hudson River was made, are in desperate need of attention.

In addition, the Friends of Sterling Forest host lectures, hikes and special events each month, promoting the Park.  The public is cordially invited to attend these events free of charge.
