Amity Gallery is pleased to present “Creatures, Large and Small”, and will be opening the exhibition with a reception.

Featuring both indigenous and exotic animals, this show will include works by fourteen local and regional artists. The exhibit highlights the various creative processes artists use to realize their goals. Genres represented include painting, drawing, stencil, woodcut, sculpture, and photography.
The representation of animals in art dates at least as far back as the Paleolithic period, as in the caves of Lascaux, France or Altamira, Spain. Over the course of human history there have been multiple themes in the depiction of animals by artists: magical, symbolic, totemic, and purely for the fascination and love of the animal itself as a vital force in the natural world. In this show, we see an array of wild and domestic creatures. The various mediums through which these images are created reflect the individual artist’s sensibility.
In addition to the traditions of painting in oil, acrylic or watercolor depicted in this show, the use of newer materials such as micron pens and markers create another dimension. Stenciling and the use of spray paint reflect a more modern pop art sensibility. Along with graphite and charcoal, the use of silverpoint creates an especially delicate line in drawing. Woodcuts, an ancient method of carving on a block of wood, generates prints in black and white or color. Finally, sculpting in wood, stone, metal or ceramic creates concrete works of art with three-dimensional presence.
The artists represented in Creatures Large and Small are: Flavia Bacarella, George Corbin, Connie Dorsey, Roslyn Fassett, Pat Foxx, Shayne Haysom, Chesley Leber, Phyllis Lehman, Dan Mack, Karen Martis, Michael Netter, Lisa Toth, Lynn Youland, and the late Natalie Surving.
The exhibit will run from August 6th thru 28th.
The gallery is open weekends from 1:00 to 4:00pm.
